What further strategies can I put in place to ensure that acceleration of learning can happen?
Can this accelerated improvement be sustained over a long period?
What have I noticed that has made me reflect on my own practice?
How do we get children to share their learning? What strategies work best? Do the children listen better to “kidtalk” or “teacher talk” when explaining their learning? What are the best way to listen to a child’s learning? How do I know where the child is at? Questioning techniques to find out what the children understand. We need less teacher talk and more classroom noise where children can share their learning and understanding.
Observing and connecting. The challenge is to sit somewhere in the classroom and give more Deliberate Acts of Teaching…modelling, use of materials, sharing of knowledge. It’s not about wandering and observing and commenting. Try to teach in a way where you pretend you can’t speak.
Group teaching vs small group learning led by the children.(Independent activities) We must try to emulate specific teaching by teaching at a spot and having the children out in groups/pair/ discussion groups. We need to rethink the setup of our environment. Less is more. We need to be forced to think about the work space. It’s for the children. We need a structured place...not chaos. We need children to learn how to manage their environment.
Creating an environment to provide support for learners that is respectful of, and responsive to, individual learner preferences, needs, and values.
Behaviour management - expectations need to be explicit
Choose what they want to do and have a plan throughout the week.
Purpose of schools is to give kids opportunities to work in a collaborative environment 21st century.
What value is there in children making the decision on where to sit? Independence/flexibility
Modelling explicit learning - Teaching is questioning, modelling and having conversations with...and the only way we can do this is with groups. We get to know our learners’ better by doing this.
A focus more on teaching workshops where children can attend/opt into. Enables teacher to zone in on strategies a particular student uses and highlights next steps/gaps in learning.
Need to make sure kids write out the number sentence of what the problem is actually asking. What is the operation that you need.
Group teach target for writing all days then divide rest into 4 groups of 6. So see each group of the 4 twice a week
Behaviour Management - having high expectations/independence. We need to have high expectations.
The one-size-fits-all approach does not work for everyone.
Maths Mixed Ability - feedback with teacher
Strategy shown on whiteboard with students chosen to share thinking.
